Tasked to craft an online presence for an internationally-renowned photo media artist, I set out to strike a balance between aesthetics and utility – I wanted to create something beautiful that was also an accurate and informative archive.

Anne Zahalka is one of Australia’s most highly regarded photo-media artists having exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas. After more than 30 years on the contemporary art stage, Anne’s work has cemented its place in art history, becoming an important part of the Australian cultural landscape she’s explored throughout her career.
Taking in Anne’s vast portfolio you can’t help but feel nostalgic and forward-looking all at once; her art provokes both a sense of yearning for what was while deeply rooting us in what is. Because her works are so absolutely provocative it was important to develop a clean, sparse site, leaving ample visual space to reflect and consider. So too was it essential to display the works true to their intended ambit, and to include every element of the artwork data in the image lightboxes. The result is a clean, functional site that focuses on the subtleties as much as it does the overview.
